“And that’s just it, isn’t it? That’s how we manage to survive the loss. Because love, it never dies, it never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it.”
I like to believe that there are two types of books in this world. There are books that you spend a few days reading where you get lost in the world and the writers words and then you have books that you have to read in one sitting that you can’t bare to put down until you’ve read those final words in the final chapter. If I Stay by Gayle Forman was the later.
The story follows seventeen year old Mia who happens to be a very talented musician. Mia’s family are pretty amazing and she grew up surrounded by music so it’s hard not to imagine her falling in love with music like her parents. Mia has the kind of family you could only ever wish to be a part of and a boyfriend that could only exist inside a fictional world. However Mia has a decision to make that determines her future. She can follow her love of music or she can follow her heart and the love of her life. Then, like a shock to the system, the world Mia has always known is flipped upside down and changed. The only thing that remains the same is one question that Mia has spent the past few months asking, should I go or should I stay?
The book is filled with grief but surrounded by the grief is happiness and sweet beautiful moments that make your heart melt as you smile. The book is so beautiful written that you’ll be laughing through your tears. Gayle Forman brought a tragic story to life and filled it with beautiful moments that make your heartache. As you read along you almost want to shout at the book and help Mia make her life changing choice but if you’re anything like me you may be conflicted in what you want her to choose. It’s a hard choice to make and for Mia there’s only one real question, should I stay?
Have you read the book? Would love to hear your thoughts! 🙂
